[Elphaba Thropp]
[/center]Age: 19
Gender: Lady
Rank: Lost
Fandom: Wicked (Musical)
Canon Pull Point: After flying from the Emerald City the first time
Appearance:
The first thing most people notice about Elphaba is her green skin. Her skin is pure green, paler on the palms and soles of her feet, and her lips are a slightly darker shade. Looking past the green skin, Elphaba is actually fairly pretty. She has long eyelashes and oval eyes. Her eyes are dark brown. Her nose is maybe a bit on the long side, a little hookish, but it's far from ugly. Her mouth is usually set in a firm line, but smiles aren't completely alien to her. When Elphaba smiles, it lights up her entire expression, her shoulders and head lifting, her teeth white and brilliant against her green skin. Her hair is wavy, wiry, and black. It flows down past her shoulders, though she mostly keeps it tied back in a braid and/or hidden until the pointy, black hat Galinda gave her as a present not long after they first met.
She prefers dark colors, black especially. She rarely dresses to impress, preferring practicality over pretty things, though she isn't opposed to looking nice every now and then. Her movements are confident, and it's easy to get the impression that she always knows what she's doing. Elphaba is incredibly conscious of how she appears, and she isn't afraid of using it to her advantage, especially to frighten or intimidate. However, if anyone were to study her, they might notice that at times, she seems aimless, daydreaming, or lost in thought and enjoying every moment of it.
Personality: Elphaba seems to be a closed shell to most people. Used to being an outcast and a loner because of her skin color, her magic powers, and her unfortunate family circumstances. She immediately distrusts everyone, expecting to be mocked or hurt, and it can be difficult to get her to open up. Words don't sway her, but actions speak to her. A person who shows themselves to be brave or kind can worm their way through her walls and into her inner circle.
Elphaba is extremely intelligent and prefers learning to almost anything else. Her interests are vast, and she wants to know everything she can. Her curiosity is undeniable, but it also comes from ambition. Elphaba has big dreams, but she's also secretly idealistic. She believes in right and wrong, and she is willing to stand up for what is right regardless of the cost. She's selfless to a fault, secretly wanting to please and help everyone she can, to the point of giving up everything she has. In the end, it helps that she doesn't trust many people because it would be easy for her to be taken advantage of by the wrong people.
She is also extremely stubborn. Once she has got an idea in her head, it'll take an act of god to get her to relent and let it go. Until evidence disproves her, Elphaba will stick by what she believes to be right no matter what. If wrongfully challenged or pushed to the side too often, Elphaba's temper flares up. She lashes out. While not physically strong, she can put her smarts to dangerous use.
Elphaba isn't so good at social situations, as she hasn't had a lot of experience with them. However, once she has made a friend, she is extremely good. She'd do anything for them that she could as long as she didn't perceive it as being bad. She's protective of and loyal to the people she cares for, and she is genuinely interested in them and wants to learn how best to make them happy.
History: Elphaba was the firstborn daughter of Frexspar Thropp, the mayor of Munchkinland, and his wife Melena Thropp. Her being born green was a very devastating surprise. Frexspar saw it as an omen and Elphaba began life with his scorn. His disapproval and hatred of her grew with time. When Melena became pregnant again, she took to chewing milkflowers in hopes that her child would be born a normal color. As a result, Elphaba's little sister Nessarose was born without the ability to walk, and Melena died. Frexspar loved Nessa, and Elphaba was brought up to care for her sister, always aware of the fact that that her father disliked her.
Elphaba grew up, friendless and purposeless. People who weren't turned away by Elphaba's skin were, instead, frightened by the strange things that happened whenever Elphaba's temper rose. It would take most of her life before Elphaba would know it to be the magic it was. Instead, the happenings were written off as another strange thing about Elphaba that people didn't like.
When Nessa went to Shiz University, Elphaba was sent along as a caretaker. She was interested in the college herself, but she knew her primary duty was to take care of Nessa. However, during a frustrated moment, Elphaba released her fury in the form of magic, and it happened to be noticed by Madam Morrible, the Witchcraft professor who became Elphaba's private tutor to teach her how to control her powers.
A mix-up made her roommates with Galinda Upland, a popular girl who got along with everyone the way Elphaba never could. Elphaba despised her from the start, preferring to focus on her studies, on Nessa, and on not letting the people who avoided or antagonized her gain any ground. Galinda wanted to study Witchcraft too, but since she lacked any of Elphaba's natural talent, Madam Morrible wouldn't give her a chance.
Everything changed when Fiyero, a winkie prince, rolled into town, bringing his fun-loving, lackadaisical party with him. He arranged for the students to take over the Ozdust for a dance. Elphaba had no intention of going, but a series of events changed her mind. Galinda deflected an unwanted date to Nessa and gave an unwanted, pointy, black hat to Elphaba. Elphaba attended the dance to thank Galinda and reveal that she had talked Madam Morrible into letting Galinda into the Witchcraft seminars. Galinda and Elphaba took the first step towards having a strong friendship.
However, in the midst of all the school-related chaos, Elphaba became aware of something dark stirring on the horizon. Her favorite professor was a Goat named Dr. Dillamond who was being harassed by anonymous people who insisted that, as an Animal, he had no place in the human world. He also had horrifying stories he told Elphaba of Animals who were losing their ability to speak.
He lost his speech not long after. Galinda adopted his pronunciation of her name to show support when the students held a minor revolt, but Elphaba's major show of support came when a Lion cub was brought in to one of the classes. Fiyero aided her in rescuing and releasing the Lion. Elphaba realized she was attracted to him, but as he was Glinda's boyfriend, she realized that she would never be attractive to him or, probably, any normal person.
Madam Morrible arranged for Elphaba to meet the Wizard, Oz the Great and Powerful to discuss her potential as a witch. Elphaba saw the chance to talk to the Wizard about the Animals, certain that he would figure out how to help them. She invited Glinda on her trip as well, wanting her best friend to come with her.
They had a magical day in the Emerald City, but it came to a very depressing end when Elphaba met her hero. The Wizard gave her the Grimmerie, a book of magic that she could read that he couldn't. He and Madam Morrible tricked her into making wings grow on the back of monkeys, a painful process made emotionally agonizing when the Wizard revealed that he intended to use them as spies against the Animals. He offered Elphaba a place by his side, but she refused, realizing that popularity wasn't as important as standing up for what was right. She stole the Grimmerie and ran for the tower with Glinda hot on her heels.
They had a confrontation in the tower where Glinda urged Elphaba to turn back and get what she'd always been dreaming of. Elphaba couldn't do it, but she offered Glinda the chance to run away with her. Glinda chose to remain behind. They parted on amicable terms, but they parted realizing that neither of them would ever be able to change the decision they were making and the fates it would lead them both to.
Elphaba used the Grimmerie to enchant a broomstick to fly, and as the Wizard's guards burst into the room, she took off, flying from the Emerald City and leaving her friend, her past, and her future behind her to take a stand. She camped out that night in the forest on the close side of Winkie Country, and she would wake up in a place that strongly resembled the Shifting Sands, the desert that surrounds Oz.
