Toothless
Age: Young adult for his species.
Gender: Male
Rank: Lost
Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon
Canon Pull Point: Mid-Gift of the Night Fury
Appearance: Toothless is... well, he's a dragon. He is undeniably a dragon, four legs and two wings and a tail and fire breath and all. But that is where the resemblance to other dragons ends. In nearly everything else, he is entirely wrong to the eyes of the Pernese.
Toothless is a Night Fury, and first and foremost Night Furies are built to fly. His overall shape is rather like a torpedo for best aerodynamics: he has a short blunt muzzle and wedge-shaped head, a short thick neck rather than the long serpentine one that other dragons possess, leading to a thick deep chest with large lung capacity and powerful flight muscles. His body is long and low-slung, with short sturdy legs that give him a somewhat feline gait and posture. And to further augment his agility, Toothless is small for a dragon, one of the smallest of the dragon breeds that is still capable of bearing a rider. He is perhaps four or five feet tall at the shoulder (shorter than Hiccup, who is not very big to begin with) and he can carry one adult or two gangly Viking teenagers.
Most notably, Toothless has enormous wings for his size, and two sets of tail fins. Night Furies have the largest wing to body ratio of any dragon breed, and their incredible power-to-weight ratio gives them the ability to make vertical takeoffs. Like all of his breed, Toothless is capable of long effortless glides or dazzling aerial stunts. The tail fins can be opened or closed at will in mid-flight to make small, subtle adjustments, giving him remarkable precision at tight maneuvers. He can also fold in his wings like a falcon and pull off screamingly fast dives thanks to his fast reflexes. One of his tail fins was torn off by a Viking projectile weapon, but thanks to the ingenuity of his boy Hiccup, Toothless' missing tail fin was replaced by an artificial one made out of light flexible materials. If it were to be damaged, Toothless would be functionally rudderless and thus incapable of flying.
Unlike Pernese dragons, Toothless’ skin is scaly rather than leathery. The scales are thin and smooth, and provide little in the way of defense: they might turn aside a small knife, but a determined human with a sword would have no trouble cutting through Toothless’ scaled hide. A Night Fury is designed to strike hard and fast, not to engage in an all-out brawl. Accordingly, Toothless’ hide is pure black with the faintest hint of blue, to make him virtually invisible against the night sky. His golden eyes, catlike with pupils that can dilate from round to vertical and back, provide him with excellent night vision, and he has no problems flying by starlight. He also has retractable teeth and claws - hence the name Toothless.
Toothless can breathe fire without chewing firestone – although perhaps “fire” isn’t quite the right word for it. It’s actually a semi-solid mass with an acetylene/oxygen flame that explodes on impact, producing a unique blue fireball that acts more like a ballistic weapon than a flamethrower. This gives him pinpoint accuracy, but may not be quite as effective against Thread.
Personality: Night Furies are highly intelligent creatures. Toothless, if he could talk, would be the first to tell you that he’s just as smart as a human – and smarter than some. But that doesn’t mean that his brain works exactly like a human’s brain. He is still a wild animal and an apex predator. Since Hiccup “tamed” him he is relatively friendly to humans, but he hasn’t forgotten that some have tried to capture or kill him before. He is perfectly capable of defending himself with teeth, claws, and fire… and he’s got no genetically-imprinted Kitti-Ping-created mental block to hold him back from hurting a human if he has to. The good news is that he most likely won’t unless someone else threatens him first: humans are, in his mind, noisy but mostly harmless creatures that frequently provide him with fish, one of his favorite foods. Also thumbs are useful. Toothless doesn’t have any, which means he needs humans to use their thumbs for him to do things like open doors or build him a tail fin.
Overall, Toothless’ demeanor is very catlike, right down to the mannerisms. He likes to pounce on small fast-moving things, he is insatiably curious and will go through all your stuff, and while he is devoted to his boy, he is also a very independent creature. Being separated from Hiccup worries him, but more in the sense that Hiccup needs Toothless rather than the other way around. The Night Fury is quite capable of taking care of himself, now that he no longer needs to rely on his Viking friend to fly.
As for language, Toothless has a broad range of sounds, from roaring and hissing to purring to warbling and even laughing. But his vocal cords aren’t designed to make human sounds. How much English Toothless actually understands is arguable: he spent most of his life as a wild dragon, and it’s only in the past year or so that he’s been around humans, listening to human sounds and putting meanings to them. Certainly, he understands the gist of what is being said to him. Toothless can read moods perfectly, and ninety percent of communication is nonverbal: facial expressions, posture, tones of voice. And he can pick out words that are familiar to him, but he is still in the process of learning. Consider his fluency around the level of a first-year foreign language student, only without the speaking part.
He is shy of strangers, and true to his nature as a camouflaged predator, he’d rather observe a situation from a high vantage point rather than charge right in. A proud creature, he is prone to occasional fits of temper when he feels helpless or defensive. Toothless will face an enemy head-on if someone he cares about is threatened, and he will put his own life on the line for someone he is loyal to. But except in those extreme circumstances, he is reclusive and analytical by nature. He approaches new things methodically, except for when his curiosity gets the better of him. But when he gets his mind set to something, he will persevere: when he had to relearn how to fly, it took dozens of awkward crashes before he got the hang of it, but he never balked. He is also inventive, able to switch up tactics on the fly mid-battle, as when he fought the enormous Red Death.
While it takes some time for Toothless to warm up to someone, when he does, he’s a good friend. He adores physical affection: cuddles, petting, a scratch under the jaw. Once he’s relaxed enough to let someone into his personal space, he will be all over them. Toothless enjoys mimicking human behavior as a form of play. He’s also surprisingly capable of empathy – as demonstrated when Hiccup lost his helmet, Toothless understands the concept of sentimental value in an object, and went to great lengths to retrieve it. He’s also playful and full of boundless energy. While he may not be able to mindspeak or Impress, dragons of his world do seem to form an attachment in particular to one person who rides them regularly. No one could ever truly replace Hiccup, but while he is stranded, he might take a shine to someone.
History: Not much is known about Toothless’ early life, prior to his first contact with humans. Presumably it was like most dragons: he was born on a small volcanic island, to which dragons each midwinter to mate and lay their eggs. Once he was old enough to fly, he moved back to the dragons’ home: a communal nest not far from the island of Berk, in which dragons of all different breeds mingled. The nest was protected by a nearly impassable maze of treacherous shoals, thick fog, and tall spires of rock that made navigating by sea virtually impossible, and navigating by air difficult for all but dragons who knew the way. The local sailors called it Helheim’s Gate, and dozens of ships had been lost there.
This protection was vital, because the island of Berk was inhabited by Vikings. Angry, dragon-killing Vikings. Granted, the Vikings had good reason to hate dragons: the dragons frequently raided their village, stealing livestock and fish, setting fire to buildings, and generally causing havoc as wild predators tend to do. Being a Night Fury, Toothless was adept at stealthy combat and quick bombing runs: it was generally his job to fly in under cover of darkness and take out torches, catapults, and other defensive measures so that his fellow dragons could strike without interference.
At some point, however, the nest was taken over by a truly massive dragon: the Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, or Red Death. This enormous beast was large enough to snap up other dragons whole without any difficulty, and it promptly settled into the dragons’ mountain home as queen of them all. The other dragons were forced to raid Berk more and more frequently, putting themselves in greater danger, and bring back all the spoils to feed the enormous Red Death. Any dragon that brought back an insufficient offering was eaten alive. Toothless survived, presumably by being vital to raids, but it is worth noting that he appeared to be the only Night Fury living in the mountain nest. They were vanishingly rare to begin with, but perhaps the stealthy black dragons moved on when the Red Death moved in, hoping for better conditions elsewhere. Only Toothless remained, for reasons of his own… But as the Vikings of Berk had never actually seen a Night Fury, only the evidence of its destruction, no one else was aware that there was only one left in Berk.
Unbeknownst to Toothless, a young Viking named Hiccup was building a weapon to take down the legendary Night Fury. Hiccup, being rather small and intellectual for a Viking, wasn’t much good at swinging axes or punching out dragons with his bare hands. But he could build a projectile weapon the likes of which Berk had never seen before. And when he fired it, by luck or fate, the hurled bolas struck true. Toothless’ body was entangled in ropes and he crashed to the ground at Raven’s Point, just outside the village. Due to the force of his crash, he left a trail of broken trees, shattered branches, and other devastation in his wake… and he left a chunk of his tail fin behind.
He lay there, trapped and crippled and unable to move, until morning. But when Hiccup arrived to finish him off, the Viking boy couldn’t do it. He couldn’t bring himself to take the life of a helpless dragon. He cut the ropes and let Toothless go. Puzzled, Toothless let the boy live, but bolted away through the trees. After several failed attempts at flight, Toothless found himself trapped in a rocky, bowl-like valley with a pond at the center of it. He could not gain enough lift with his crippled rudder to free himself from his prison, but there was water, and fish in the pond that he could catch. It was not a comfortable or dignified existence, but he could survive.
Strangely, the Viking boy came back. Again and again, he came back. He brought fish, and he made strange little marks in his book, and he watched Toothless. Toothless didn’t understand the purpose of the marks, but he appreciated the fish, and grudgingly he began to accept Hiccup’s company. He even tried to share some of the fish with the boy (who looked underfed) although for some reason Hiccup didn’t like regurgitated raw fish. Humans are weird like that. It took a long time for Toothless to fully trust the human boy, but if it weren’t for Hiccup, he likely would have eventually starved in that valley.
And then Hiccup brought him a tail fin. Toothless didn’t understand at first what the strange contraption was, or why Hiccup was intent on attaching it to his tail. But he found that when he let Hiccup strap the strange thing onto him, he could fly again! Not well, of course. It took dozens of attempts to get to the point where human and dragon could coordinate their efforts: where once Toothless had been able to make small adjustments with a thought and a twitch of his tail, Hiccup needed to learn the hard way how to respond to the dragon’s flight patterns and steer in tandem with him. But after one botched flight and a near-death plummet, they got the hang of it, working with one another on a level deeper than communication. Flying with one mind, as if they shared a single body, was inexplicably exhilarating… and freeing. Finally Toothless was back in his element.
The peace couldn’t last. Ultimately Astrid, Hiccup’s fellow Viking-in-training, discovered the two of the together. Initially Astrid was going to spill the secret to the other Vikings and have Toothless killed, but after a rocky flight together, Hiccup got her to understand the wonder that a dragon-rider partnership could provide. And Toothless, unable to communicate why the dragons raided Berk, took the two of them to the nest to see the Red Death with their own eyes.
Hiccup and Astrid resolved to share the secret with the rest of Berk’s residents, to show them that humans and dragons could live in peace. But it ended in disaster, with Hiccup forced into the arena with a furious, captive dragon trying to kill him. Toothless rushed to intervene, attacking the dragon and saving Hiccup’s life, but in doing so he revealed himself to all of Berk. The warriors captured Toothless, restraining and muzzling him so that he could not breathe fire or fly away. They loaded him onto a ship, then used his ability to navigate the dangerous waters around Helheim’s Gate. Soon enough a whole fleet of ships launched their attack against the nest, led by Hiccup’s father Stoick the Vast.
None of them, of course, were prepared for the Red Death. Dozens of times larger than any dragon breed known to humans, with enormous befanged jaws and a tail like a mace meant for crushing, it decimated the human warriors without even trying, setting their ships afire so that they couldn’t escape. It would have ended in slaughter if it weren’t for the arrival of Hiccup and his friends, on the backs of tamed dragons. Hiccup freed Toothless, with his father’s help, and the two of them were back in the air together once again. Together, Hiccup and Toothless and the other dragonriders harassed the Red Death into taking flight. The enormous beast was ungainly in the air, Toothless easily flying rings around it. He lured the Red Death into stormclouds, where the dark stealthy little dragon would have the advantage, then shredded its wings with well-timed blasts of fire. With one final blast, Toothless ignited the Red Death’s flame inside its enormous maw, burning the huge beast from the inside out in a massive explosion.
Hiccup and Toothless both nearly died; Toothless shielded his rider from the worst of the damage, but Hiccup lost a leg in the blast. He built himself a replacement, so that he and his dragon matched at last. There was peace in Berk, with dragons now accepted and welcomed in society, and a new generation of dragonriders.
Some time later, Hiccup lost his helmet while flying with Toothless, when they were caught up in the seasonal dragon migration to lay eggs. Toothless had no interest in going to the island, as he had no mate. But he wanted to retrieve the helmet for Hiccup, and so when Hiccup built him a new tail that Toothless could use to fly without the aid of a rider, Toothless headed off to go find it. In mid-flight he was caught in a strange storm, far out at sea, and when he landed at last he found himself in a faraway desert…
