J'shom
Age: 25 Turns
Rank: Wing Rider
Appearance: J'shom is a tall man, standing at almost 6'5. His skin is normally quite pale, but due to sun exposure, it now has a golden hue, and is splattered with freckles; most of which are along his arms and face. He has dirty blond hair, which now has streaks of lighter blond, thanks to the sun. Out of practicality, he has always kept his hair fairly short, never letting it grow much longer than an inch. Of his most notable features, he has large, blue eyes and a strong jawline. Thanks to his upbringing and constant physical work, he is well-muscled. His work has also granted him rough, callused hands, which bear multiple scars from cuts of varying degrees. This roughness belies the extreme dexterity that he possesses, another outcome of his craft work. He also has one long gash on his chest, stemming from his right collarbone at an angle, just passing his sternum; Volinth, just out of the shell, was much faster than J'shom had anticipated, and he didn't get out of his way quite fast enough. It was not a deep wound, though, and suffered no long-term consequences.
Although many of the Smithcrafthall did not find it of high importance, J'shom likes to look presentable for any occasion. Thus, as long as he isn't working, he will be in attire that is comfortable, practical, and looks nice. He may not be the best dressed man in the room, but he certainly is not a slob. He tends towards more neutral colors when working, favoring various shades of brown, but wears bold colors on other occasions, be they blue, violet, red, or even green. He is not one for superstition, and knows that the color of ones clothes does not bring about bad luck.
J'shom is a fairly expressive person, using his hands often during daily conversation. Be it a vague gesture as he is illustrating an odd happening from earlier in the sevenday or a definite, explained gesture to accurately show the mechanics of how an object works, you can expect to see a few motions throughout a conversation with him. Other than this, he also pops his joint a few times in the day. Most of the time, it is just his knuckles that he attends to in public. However, if he is rather stiff that day, he can be seen popping shoulders and back, as well.
Personality: Growing up as an only child with loving parents, J'shom has always had a positive air about him. If he can, he always looks at the bright side of a situation, and can often be found smiling. He can best be described as a new soul, finding wonder in just about everything. Because of this, many people that don't know him may believe that he is naive, but this is not the case. If he is slighted, he will respond as is appropriate. New people and the prospect of new friends always puts him in a good mood. He is also fond of children, anxiously awaiting the day he has one of his own. Until then, he is perfectly happy to play with and help take care of the various kids of the Weyr, when he has the time to.
In his work, he is extremely driven and committed to whatever project he is currently assigned. Be it studying a new concept or trying to improve upon a current design, he will work with a single-minded focus until the task is done. Growing up in the Smithcrafthall, this was something that he needed to have to excel. It may also be what got him noticed in the Search, as he can now use that dedication to tasks about the Weyr and during Threadfall. When he doesn't have duties to attend to, he often enjoys taking long, leisurely flights with Volinth. They both enjoy the time to reflect; absorbing the sun, the breeze flowing over skin and hide, talking about various subjects or not talking at all. It is the perfect way to spend hours away from everyone, alone with his best friend.
On a more personal level, his dedication also transfers to those that he loves. Although he is kind to almost everyone, there are very few that he allows himself to love. Those that do make it within his guarded heart learn things about J'shom that not many others know. For instance, he has a very intense fascination towards and passion for music. His father considered music frivolous and unworthy of being given any man's attention, however, so he grew accustomed to hiding his love for music. He hid this not just from his parents, but from all except those who were the closest to his heart.
History:
J'shom was born just under twenty years before the beginning of the Pass. His original name was Jeshom, before he took on the honorific shortening of his name upon Impressing Volinth. He is an only child, and was raised by two very loving parents. In his early years, he was taken care of by his mother, and followed her around to "help" take care of her duties when he was old enough. He would occasionally spend days with his father in the forging halls, but only under strict supervision. That changed when he was eight, as he was deemed ready to begin his apprenticeship. Thus, he spent most days in the forge under his father's tutelage. Occasionally, he would train under others in the Smithcrafthall to learn various methods.
After a few years, he began following his mother around again - when he could. This was anytime his father was low on tasks for the day. J'shom has always been a mama's boy, and after he had learned enough to work on his own, his father would allow him to go off to spend time with her. That was when she taught him to cook, a fairly uncommon skill for most men. He also learned the basics of sewing and other matronly tasks.
When he was of age, he began receiving his own tasks from the Smithcrafthall. This cut down on his time with both his parents, but he was prepared for such a shift. He also worked enough to get his own place, small as it was. His love affairs were few and far between. He had plenty of friends, some very close to him. But there were none that he had taken a keen interest in in any other way than platonically.
It was almost 19 turns after his birth that the dragonrider Jayli and his green Talloranth Searched him. He went to the Igen Weyr, thrilled with the idea of becoming a 'rider himself. When the fairly large, chestnut-colored baby dragon shuffled up to him, he knew that they would be 'rider and dragon. This knowledge was enough to stun him into hesitancy, and he was gouged across the chest by the dragon. Much of what came after is pain-blurred, but he did remember being patched up by several people. While they were working on his chest, he looked to his left to see the baby dragon laying by him patiently. he looked into the rainbow swirls of the dragon's large, angled eye, and he knew peace. It washed over him in waves, accompanied by a single word. A name; Volinth.
Since Impressing his brown, he has lived with the Igen weyrfolk. Being amongst the other new 'riders was interesting, as most of them were considerably younger than he was. For the first couple of years, as Volinth matured, J'shom mostly assisted around the Weyr with repairs. He made quick friends with the 'rider that searched him out, Jayli. He soon become a consultant of sorts for his fashion sense; often, J'shom either critiques or models styles for the other man. Granted, he will not wear everything that Jayli wants him to, but they have always had a great deal of fun together.
After Volinth came of age, they became Thread fighters. J'shom had impressed just before the beginning of the Pass, and knew that they would fight Thread as soon as they were able. They received a few injuries in the beginning, but Volinth has only had one serious injury - attained from a particularly heavy Fall.
J'shom still helps out with maintenance around the Weyr, but the pair enjoy long flights out over various parts of the world in their free time. In the past turn or so, the two have attended a Search; both Volinth and J'shom enjoyed it thoroughly. They have decided to try their hand at Searching the next chance they get.
[Volinth]
{Dragon}
Age: 6 Turns
Color: Brown
Sex: Male
{Fighter}
Appearance:
Volinth is larger than the average brown, larger even than some bronzes. He is very well muscled with a broad frame, which makes him fairly slow. However, he is built well for both speed - but not quick acceleration - and extended flights, thanks to the excursions he and J'shom regularly go on.
His hide is mostly a rich chestnut; a hearty brown with hints a red. A darker brown, oaken color extends across shoulders and down his spine halfway between his shoulders and his hips, almost like condensed freckles. This same color can be seen at speckled lightly down his tail, and concentrated again at the triangular tip. His wing membranes are lighter, almost russet in color, and contain less of a red hue.
Volinth has but one scar to speak of: a length of threadscore on his left hind leg from one of their first flights against thread. It was particularly heavy during that Fall, and there were even many experienced riders that were hurt. Needless to say, he hasn't beaten himself up about it too much.
Personality:
Volinth is, to say the least, a calm dragon. He is often serene, keeping his head in the most volatile of situations. In this sense, he is perfect for balancing J'shom, whose emotions can run wild at times. When J'shom is not with him, he can often be found lying about in various glades, sunbathing and relaxing in general. He has discussions with other dragons as well, if it happens to suit him at the time.
He does enjoy social interaction, and is not against talking to the passing human. He finds that they are often not the most logical, but they provide an entertainment of sorts. On the other hand, he does have times where he won't speak to anyone but J'shom for days; there is no particular reason for this, he simply doesn't desire it nor think it necessary.
More than anything, Volinth loves flying. If it's a sunny day, with the wind not blowing too hard, he will fly for at least an hour out of sheer enjoyment. There is really no greater feeling than flying; even better when J'shom joins him. When they fly together, he will often rise high above the clouds, hang for a moment, then drop straight down, free falling until the last possible moment. At that moment, he unfurls his wings to pull up into a soft glide over the treeline, ocean, or what-have-you. These are the moments that Volinth cherishes most, because he can both please and frighten his 'rider at the same time. Why this mix of emotions in his 'rider pleases Volinth so much, he will never know. He simply enjoys things as they happen.
