[Diedro]
Age: 22
Gender: Lady
Rank: Wherhandler
Appearance:
Diedro is a sight to see. A lanky woman reaching nearly six feet and four inches, she towers over many of her fellow pernese. Diedro is all legs and arms, with no curves to speak of. She likes it that way. She is skinny and angular, all sharp elbows and knobbly knees. Despite her strange, awkward appearance she is shockingly agile and graceful, with a great deal of flexibility which aids her in her more dangerous hobbies. Her time as a wherhandler has put an understandable degree of muscle on her, but Diedro simply doesn't bulk up easily.
Diedro has fairly long, 'noble' features. She has a strong, defined jaw and a nose that at one point was long and straight. Turns spent scrapping with weyrbrats and holdbrats alike have left her with a crooked nose with a prominent bump, and she's visibly missing one of her teeth from where it got knocked out in a fight. Her teeth are crooked and prominent, but Diedro isn't particularly bothered by this. She has fairly visible scars from her adventure, many of which are on her arms and legs.
Naturally a pallid blonde, Diedro shaves her head to prevent her hair being grabbed by any feral creatures or renegades she may come across as a wherhandler. Her eyes, perhaps her most attractive feature, are a startlingly dark shade of blue. While she naturally leans towards a pale complexion, turns in the desert have left her tanned. She has a lot of freckles.
Diedro dresses in practical clothing, particularly on patrol nights. When off duty, she likes to wear horrible hand-me-downs that are often in ugly, clashing colors. She likes it like that. She usually wears a hat to keep her scalp from being sunburned, and she wears covering, light clothing.
Personality:
Diedro is as much a force of nature as a real person. She is larger then life, with extreme emotions. When Diedro is irritated, she is furious. When Diedro is sad, she's devastated. She does her best to control her extremes in emotion, but if someone pushes Diedro enough she will absolutely explode. Her temper is a fearsome thing and while she has learned over the years to restrain herself from lashing out that won't stop her from stomping out of a room and screaming at the top of her lungs. She is frequently excited, and as such a bit louder then is necessary or polite. She doesn't mean it. She just doesn't realize how loud she is.
In spite of this, or perhaps because, she deals with the emotional extremes of others with a great deal of ease. Diedro doesn't crack under pressure, as a stressful situation gives her something to focus on and a way to ignore her emotions. It's casual situations that can set Diedro off. An argument with a friend will leave her a sobbing mess, while the death of a fellow handler during a patrol will earn a grunt and Diedro will go on. She has learned to hide her outbursts from others, and does her best to escape to a private place before she freaks out. Sparkle is her greatest ally at times like this, and is the one thing guaranteed to drag Diedro out of a melt down.
Diedro believes in freedom. Her turns spent under the expectations of her family have left a mark on her, and as such she has grown to hate many societal standards. No, she shouldn't wear dresses because she's a woman. No, men can wear dresses when they want. What's the big deal? She avoids polite, formal events as she feels extremely uncomfortable during them. She can be a bit overly informal with those in positions of power, which can bite her in the butt at times. Lord Holders just make her uncomfortable in general.
Diedro is a friendly person. She has a big heart and a whole lot of love, and she likes to share it. She enjoys showing her affection to friends with extravagant gestures and gifts, and is fiercely loyal as a default. Diedro's loyalty isn't a thing easily lost. She can be a bit oblivious to others feelings, but she does her best to be understanding and a supportive friend. She loves making friends, and any opportunity to will be happily taken. Diedro, unfortunately, has a surprisingly hard time standing up for herself. She bows easily to the will of her friends, which is usually when Diesk has to come to her rescue with growls and angry wher sounds.
Diedro is a huge romantic. She dreams of a harper song romance, with flowers and midnight walks. She will be the one to give the flowers, if she has anything to say about it. Despite this, she can be extremely oblivious to feelings directed at her and romantic feelings even more so. She often has problems 'spitting it out' as well, and is the type to spend weeks trying to plan out a declaration of love only to blurt it out over lunch the next day and then be utterly mortified.
Diedro has a love for art. Perhaps, on earth, she would have pursued a career as an artist. For now, her love remains in her room as drawings on the wall and the bright colors she dresses herself in. Diedro's other love is fighting, which she excels at. She has a great deal of reach and strength, and her training lets her use it. She obviously lacks experience, but she's swiftly making up for that.
Diedro's one true love, however, will always be heights. While some may wonder why she chose to become a wherhandler, the truth is that this love was one of the reasons she pursued the life of a handler instead. A dragon didn't offer her the total freedom she wished for. Yes, a dragon could take her very high, but that would be the dragon doing all the work! Instead, Diedro spends a great deal of her time scaling the walls of the weyr. She spends outside of patrols carving foot holds for riders or marking areas for new weyrs to be carved. She is slowly becoming an excellent climber, though her age means she still makes mistakes.
History:
Diedro was born into what some mighty consider polite society. The daughter of the youngest brother of the, at the time, Lord Holder of
Keroon, the young Diedro was expected to behave in a certain way for the good of her uncle. If she acted out, she risked casting shame on him and ruining his next election. So she grew to resent her family for the restrictions placed upon her.
At ten turns, Diedro had already begun to sneak away from the watchful eye of an adult so that she could go play with the other hold kids. She became the queen of childhood rough housing, frequently thrashing the others kids. As she grew and shot up in height over her peers, she quickly had to learn to compensate for her awkward, long limbs. Dancing lessons taught by a harper helped a great deal with that.
As she entered her teenage years, Diedro stuck out like a sore thumb in her family. She had inherited the height and lankiness typical of the father, and she became a source of irritation and embarrassment for her family. Rough, bruised Diedro stuck out like a sore thumb among her family. She clashed with her parents often, which led to her isolation from the family. Her family was often desperate for her to behave or secrete herself during social events.
So they bribed her. At thirteen, Diedro was awarded a firelizard egg on the promise of good behavior. Sparkle hatched out, and soon became Diedro's only confidant in the world. Sparkle would never tell anyone else what she said. Unfortunately, the firelizard only worsened the tensions of the household. Arguments soon took place about the firelizard's thieving ways, which Diedro couldn't control in the least at the tender age of thirteen turns.
So Diedro ran away. Or rather, flew.
At fourteen, a dragon from Igen stopped by. The young blue was on her very first search, and Diedro was eager to get away. Quick lies about her parentage and a rushed search bought Diedro's freedom, and she was away to Igen Weyr before her parents were any wiser. The quick ride pulled a new love from Diedro, who adored the dizzying heights that she experienced when on dragonback.
She began to find a new hobby, scaling the sides of the Weyr when she wasn't in trouble. She had a good eye for foot holes in the walls, and became adept at seeking them out. As she grew older, she began to take commissions from riders to carve out footholds to their weyrs, for when their dragon couldn't ferry them around.
Despite her love of heights, Diedro made the choice to become a wher candidate. At eighteen turns, a brown finally awarded her an egg. Diesk hatched out, squealing and demanding to be fed. Diedro was absolutely in love with the silly beast. She joined wherling training, working on her control of her wher and remembering various skills needed for patrolling.
Diedro herself was finally getting proper tutoring on the art of fighting. She had fought for turns and turns as a child, but nothing more then silly little battles with her peers. Now, she learned to wield a knife. She was a quick learner, finding nearly enough love for this new form of fighting as she did for climbing.
Diesk reached adulthood, and the pair joined their fellows in patrols. They prowled the desert for any who got lost during the sandstorms, and guarded the Weyr at night from feral creatures and wild whers. Their first patrol, however, was a disaster. A wild brown managed to separate Diesk from the patrol and dealt a serious blow to the young green, ripping out a section of his wing membrane.
The wild brown, unfortunately for it, didn't notice Diedro until she was bringing her knife down on its head. By the time the patrol located the pair, Diedro had killed the wher and was staunching the ichor from Diesk's wing. The pair were spirited back to the Weyr, where Diesk spent a few months recovering in the infirmary. Diedro's kill of the brown became somewhat infamous for a time.
Time went on for the pair, however. Diedro began to teach Diesk to climb up steep surfaces, and while he didn't have the advantage of a humanoid body like she did he became rather adept at moving quickly on rough terrain.
[Diesk]
{Wher}
Age: Four turns
Color: Green
Sex: Male
Appearance:
Diesk is unusual for a wher, with long legs and a thin build. He is practically scrawny for his muscular species, making him a bit of an odd-ball among his fellows. His wings are long yet useless, as a fight with a feral brown left him with a chunk of wing membrane missing from his right wing. He uses them to emote most of the time, flaring them to show anger or pulling them close for caution. While these movements often seem nonsensical to strangers, he has learned to alert Diedro to the presence of others with these movements. His tail is long as well, thin and flexible and often wagged with a great deal of excitement.
Most of his body is a light, sea-foam green that sometimes has him mistaken for a small blue. However, his tail is a clear sign of his color. A dark forest green, it is dramatically different from the rest of his body. It is covered in numerous, pale green scars both from battles and Diesk growing confused and biting it during an excited frenzy. He has many scars despite his young age, both from accidents and fights with feral whers.
Diesk has a large, fancy leather collar that his handler spent nearly a turn saving up for. His name is stitched in light green, with a smaller Igen Weyr stitched under it. He is quite proud of his collar and likes tucking shiny things into it.
Personality:
Diesk is a wanna-be cat burglar, a thief who can only envy Sparkle's ability at spiriting away valuables. He is absolutely convinced that he is the sneakiest wher to be found, and he's almost right. Diesk is excellent at moving quietly over terrain, and picking the best paths. He is, unfortunately, a bit too absent-minded for any lone trickery. He requires Diedro to help him focus, and on his own Diesk is too easily distracted by the next shiny thing to pass. He often forgets to hide his tail in particular... and sometimes even forgets that the dark appendage even belongs to him. Despite his failures at skulkery, Diesk does indeed love stealing shiny objects. Most of them end up in Sparkle's ever growing hoard instead, but Diesk has managed to keep some to himself.
Diesk is, all things considered, fairly typical of his species in temperament. He is a distrustful beast, with a dislike of strangers that borders on dangerous. Diedro keeps him under control, but he treats everyone from outside of the weyr with red eyed glares and mumbly little growls. He is jealous when he accepts someone into the Weyr, guarding them with his life and expecting to be the center of their attention. He can be a bit of a show off in this regard, making a bit show of defeating an 'enemy' so that others will praise him. Because he often forgets that his tail belongs to him when greatly excited or agitated, he often snaps at it.
Despite this, he is not overly unpleasant to be around. Diesk loves to play, and his favorite game is hide and seek. He will often try to get other people of the Weyr to play with him, but he isn't very good at it. His tail sticks out too much! He is demanding when it comes to attention, begging for eye-ridge scratches or resting his head in a free lap. He loves rough housing, but he's learned to wait until Diedro tells him it's okay. Diesk enjoys the company of other whers, blending in easily with the pack and seeking out their company when not working. He likes to make pretend enemies and 'battle' them- things like a blanket or a chair.
Diesk is absolutely fearless for such a small wher. He doesn't actually realize how tiny he is, absolutely convinced that he is a BIG wher. He will happily treat whers twice his size like his equal, and many dragonriders will tell of a time that Diesk challenged their dragon to battle before Diedro managed to drag him off. He shares Diedro's love of heights, and like her has become quite adept at climbing.
[Sparkle]
{Firelizard}
Age: Nine turns
Color: Bronze
Sex: Female
{Clutcher}
Appearance:
Sparkle is an odd firelizard. She is on the large side for a bronze, a hulking monstrosity that rivals the size of some of her gold sisters. Her wingspan is impressively huge to match, which often leads to her accidentally smacking Diedro on the head when perched on her shoulder. Her tail is thick and long, perfect for curling around Diesk's neck or accidentally choking Diedro. She is chubby for a firelizard, with big fat cheeks that go well with her 'smushed' face and short muzzle.
For some reason, whenever Sparkle is happy she drools a lot. Whenever she is relaxed she lets her tongue loll out. She is not a refined firelizard in the least. Despite this, Diedro certainly dresses her like one. She has a beaded harness of green and violet, and a leather collar with her name to match Diesk. This collar also bares Diedro's name, just so everyone knows who to return Sparkle to when she gets lost.
She is a greenish light bronze is coloration, with darker extremities. Her tail begins to darken at the base, and reaches a near black color at the tip. She has two circles in her base coloration around her eyes, giving her the appearance of wearing a mask. Her toes are also this coloration, which just makes her a very silly looking flit.
Personality:
Sparkle is not a smart flit by any stretch of the imagination. She is easily confused and will spend hours trying to figure out a single command, often freezing up while she thinks and thus forcing Diedro to carry her around. She has seemingly forgotten what fear is, and will often react with stoicism to loud noises or threatening creatures. Despite this, she does her very best to please her master. She is a slow learner, but her eagerness to please often means she'll be happy to sit and spend a few candlemarks trying to figure out a command. Once she learns a command, unfortunately, she will often repeat it for no reason. Her instinctual response to a lifted hand is to give a high five. Diedro has to be careful what she teaches her as a result, because certain cues will immediately set her off on a trick. A red ball that was used to teach her fetch is permanently associated with the game in her little flitty mind.
Sparkle has a fascination for shiny things, which may explain her name. Diedro has to keep a tight leash on her, as otherwise she will join Diesk in his pilfering ways. Her nest in Diedro's room is absolutely full of stolen goods. The only time Sparkle will show aggression, outside of a threat to Diedro or Diesk, is when someone attempts to take her shiny things. She will quickly go from a sweet, lazy firelizard to a bundle of rage and hissing. Sometimes, however, she will deign to give one of her shiny things as a gift to a lucky individual.
Sparkle is a bit of a busy body. While physically lazy and gluttonous, something that will always get her moving is her fretting over everyone else. She is absolutely convinced that the world is her fair, and that has turned her into a nosy monster. She will often land on the shoulders of those she likes in order to look at what they're doing, or scold them loudly while grooming their hair if she disapproves of it. She is an extremely affectionate firelizard, and loves nothing more then to be cuddled and carried around. Scolding and yelling deeply wound her, and she will go and sulk for hours if she's scolded.
